Erzählung eines kleinen Städtchens in Upstate New York im Oktober. Legenden eines kopflosen Reiters gehen hier durchs Land und die Gemeinde ist eingeschworen. Bei der herbstlichen Kirmes sieht der neu hinzugezogene Lehrer und Erzähler Fratzen mit feurigen Augen und den Hass der Einheimischen. Das Bankett ist eröffnet aber der hinzugezogene Lehrer träumt von der Flucht, während er mit einer einem kandierten Apfel in der Hand in die Geisterbahn steigt. Am nächsten morgen ist er verschwunden.
